Rocio Navarro Mexico, b. 1991

Rocío Navarro’s work offers a profound exploration of identity, home, and cultural memory. Her latest body of work reflects her personal journey of reconciling her Mexican roots with her experience living abroad. Born in Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico, and now residing in France, Navarro’s vibrant portraits act as alter-egos, depicting the multifaceted layers of her heritage and daily life. Each piece incorporates symbols of Mexican craftsmanship, cuisine, and culture, creating a narrative of reconnection and self-discovery amidst unfamiliar surroundings.

Her paintings encapsulate the artist ongoing quest for a sense of belonging. Her signature style evokes the colorful, layered chaos of Mexico, which she recreates in her French environment. This is evident in works like Cruz de Clavos, 2024, where a mirror reflects the artist holding a pink cross and a heart adorned with milagros, symbols of resilience and faith. These elements speak to her personal experiences, including the violence in Juarez that influenced her departure, and the blending of personal and collective memory. Her work offers an intimate reflection on the universal journey to find home within oneself. Navarro creates evocative narratives that deal with nostalgia, community and self-discovery. In some works, she fuses personal and collective memory, blending past and present to create intimate and emotional sanctuaries. Through her art, Navarro offers viewers a powerful reflection on resilience, cultural identity and the quest to belong.
